Uses

Pulse rifle fire makes great cover for human movement and attack.

The pulse rifle's shots are among the most eye-catching objects in the game: big red spears of laser light. To an alien, a room filled with pulse rifle lasers looks extremely dangerous.

The psychological effect of this is useful. If a single human spams pulse fire down a hall or into a room occupied by aliens, the aliens will often retreat.

Pros

At close range, the pulse rifle deals nearly as much damage as the chaingun, making it useful for knocking back alien assaults. Away from the human base, the pulse rifle is a handy tool for dueling goons (a battery pack helps).

Cons

The slow pace of pulse rifle fire makes it nearly impossible to finish escaping aliens (they can run faster than the lasers).
